Don’t Ignore Anemia

If you think you may be anemic, it is important to see a healthcare professional.

When diagnosed, there are simple treatments available to help correct and manage iron deficiency anemia. When the condition is ignored, however, your symptoms are likely to become worse.

What a Healthcare Professional Will Do

Your healthcare professional will want to know about your general health and about any existing medical conditions you might have. He or she will also want to know if you are experiencing any symptoms of anemia. The main test used to diagnose iron deficiency anemia is a blood test called a complete blood count (CBC).

If it turns out that you are anemic, your healthcare professional may want to do further tests or find out the exact cause, or he or she may want to refer you to a hematologist or an internist.

Oral iron supplements or intravenous iron may be prescribed for you. The benefit of intravenous iron is that it can bring your iron level back to normal much more quickly than with oral iron.

How to Prepare for Your Appointment

You can help your healthcare professional determine whether you have anemia by filling out a simple “Could I Be Anemic?” Questionnaire. Just print out the completed form and take it with you to your appointment.
